I like to keep this agua fresca simple and fresh. The guavas and strawberries are blended, strained, then mixed with water, lemon juice, and a touch of sweetness—use sugar or your favorite sweetener, and adjust it to your liking.
What Are Guavas (Guayabas)?
Guavas, or guayabas, are tropical fruits loved across Mexico and used in everything from paletas and ice cream to aguas frescas, jams, and candies.
They’re incredibly fragrant, with a naturally sweet and slightly tangy flavor. Depending on the variety, the flesh can range from white to soft pink or yellow, often filled with tiny edible (but quite hard) seeds.
The flavor is bright, tropical, and lightly floral—perfect for a refreshing drink like this. Personally, I like to use ripe guavas with white flesh since they’re more accessible to me, but the pink varieties make an equally delicious agua fresca.

How to Pick a Ripe Guava
- Look for color: Yellow skin is a good sign of ripeness.
- Check for softness: They should feel slightly soft when gently pressed, similar to a ripe pear.
- A ripe guava will have a strong, sweet, tropical aroma.
- Avoid overly firm fruit: This usually means it’s underripe and less sweet.
- Watch for blemishes: Small spots are fine, but avoid overly bruised or mushy fruit.
- The more fragrant the guava, the sweeter and more flavorful your drink will be.
Ingredients
- Guavas (guayabas)- Sweet, fragrant, and lightly floral. They’re the base of the drink, giving it that signature tropical flavor and aroma.
- Strawberries- Add a soft sweetness and subtle berry note. They enhance the color and round out the flavor.
- Sugar or sweetener- Balances the natural tartness. Adjust to taste depending on how ripe and sweet your fruit is.
- Lemon juice- Brightens everything with a fresh citrus touch.
- Water- Lightens the mixture and brings everything together into a smooth, refreshing agua fresca.

How to Make Guava Agua Fresca
In a blender, combine the guavas, strawberries, and 4 cups of water. Blend until completely smooth. Strain the mixture into a large pitcher.
Add the remaining 3 cups of water, sugar to taste, and lemon juice. Stir well until the sugar fully dissolves.

Serve over ice, either by adding ice directly to the pitcher or to individual glasses.
I like to add ice to the glass to keep the agua fresca from getting diluted, but adding ice to the pitcher is also a popular option.
For garnish, add guava and strawberry slices inside the glass, then finish with fresh mint and a slice of guava on the rim, if desired. Or simply enjoy it over ice.
Refrigerate any leftovers. Store in a covered pitcher or individual bottles for an easy grab-and-go option.

What Are Aguas Frescas?
Aguas frescas are meant to be delicious, refreshing, and satisfying. Some are light and fruity, while others, like horchata, are creamier—milky and gently spiced with cinnamon. Still, they all share that refreshing quality we love, with flavors that vary beautifully.

Sweetener Options I Use
As a type 1 diabetic, I try to avoid large amounts of sugar at once. Because of that, I always start with fruit that’s naturally sweet. That way, I don’t need to rely heavily on added sweeteners.
I also tend to keep it slightly under-sweetened—that’s how we’ve always enjoyed it, especially my husband. Still, you can adjust it to your liking.
Here are a few sweeteners I currently use:
- Swerve Organic Sweetener
- Whole Earth Monk Fruit Sweetener with Erythritol
- Whole Earth Sweetener with Stevia, Monk Fruit & Allulose
Storage
Refrigerate: Store in a covered pitcher or sealed bottles in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Stir well before serving, as natural separation may occur.
Freeze: Freeze in an airtight, freezer-safe container, leaving a little space for expansion, or use ice cube trays for up to 2 months.
Thaw in the refrigerator and stir well before serving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I skip straining the agua fresca?
You can, but it’s not recommended. Guava seeds are edible but very hard, so straining gives you a smoother, more enjoyable drink.
How do I know if guavas are ripe?
Ripe guavas should feel slightly soft and smell fragrant. The stronger the aroma, the sweeter the fruit.
Can I use frozen fruit instead of fresh?
Yes, frozen fruit works well. Just thaw slightly before blending for a smoother texture.
Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes, you can make it a day in advance. Store it in the refrigerator and stir before serving.
